The UPSE Alumni Association (UPSEAA) Scholarship Program

THE UPSEAA SCHOLARSHIPS

The UP School of Economics Alumni Association (UPSEAA) Scholarship Program offers financial support to undergraduate and graduate students of the UP School of Economics with the objective of:

  • helping Economics majors from low-income backgrounds cope with personal financial constraints during their stay in the School
  • attracting students of exceptional academic promise to the School of Economics

The ultimate objective is to assist the UP School of Economics in producing a growing number of world-class professional economists, or leaders in other professions who are knowledgeable in economics – all of whom could play key roles in the country’s development in the long run.

Undergraduate Assistance

The undergraduate assistance program will financially support low-income students entering the School who meet the required academic standards.

Since all low-income UP students already qualify for (income-adjusted) grants under the UP STFAP, the UPSEAA assistance is to be viewed as a supplement to STFAP support.  The additional assistance is meant to attract a greater number of high-performing students to the School; who come from low-income backgrounds.

The undergraduate financial assistance consists of a stipend of P5,000 per semester for one academic year, renewable annually, to be offered to a limited number of qualified applicants.

To qualify for assistance, students must:

  • be enrolled as an undergraduate student in the UPSE, starting with the incoming class of 2008
  • belong to income bracket D or E, as defined under the UP STFAP income bracket classification.
  • already have been admitted to the UP School of Economics (for incoming freshmen applicants) ; and
  • must satisfy UPSE’s rules for academic discipline each subsequent year.

To establish priority, students who meet the above qualifications shall be ranked according to their UPCAT scores (for incoming freshmen) or by their general weighted average (for sophomores and higher).

Graduate Fellowships

The UPSEAA graduate fellowships program will provide full support to selected students enrolled in the MA and PhD programs of the School.  The fellowships will cover the complete three-semester program for MA students or one academic year. For PhD students the fellowships shall be renewable annually.  Benefits of the fellowship are as follows:

  • tuition and other university fees
  • a book allowance of P2,000/semester
  • a monthly stipend of P5,000 for MA students or P5,500 for PhD students

The selection of UPSEAA graduate fellows shall be made in consultation with the School’s Faculty.
