UPSE Honors Professor Raul V. Fabella

Prof. Raul V. Fabella is considered by many as the Godfather of UPSEAA, weaver of dreams for UPSE’s Camelot. Prof. Fabella –Dean Raul, Dr. Fabella or just plain, friendly Raul to most friends in the alumni community – sounded the trumpet to rally the faithful who believe in UPSE as the premiere school of economics in the country, nay, Asia-Pacific.

So, when Dean Raul was recognized as a National Scientist, UPSEAAns swelled with pride, as one of our own got to be accorded the premier honor given to a man of science.

In a special meeting last Aug. 17 at the newly-renovated Galerie Joaquin in San Juan, the UPSEAA Board of Directors gathered together with UPSE’s Dean Arsi Balisacan, Profs. Ruping Alonzo and Manny Esguerra to honor our newest National Scientist.  Amid toasts and warm congratulations, UPSEAA President Ernesto Albano presented Dean Raul with a Certificate of Appreciation for,

making “us UPSEAAns proud for his being proclaimed a National Scientist, the highest accolade accorded a Filipino scholar.  His inspiring role in the renaissance of the UP School of Economics Alumni Association rallied the alumni to “rescue Camelot” and facilitated the progress towards our Vision of an alumni community actively engaged in the life of UPSE.”

Erstwhile UPSEAA President and now co-Chairman Jack Teotico gave Dean Raul a Sanso painting to symbolize his gratitude for all the efforts that the National Scientist exerted to bring UPSE and UPSEAA together.

In a very short response to a clamor for a rejoinder, Dean Raul very humbly said that when he saw a play about Camelot, he was struck by the words of the dying King Arthur, “Don’t let it be forgot…that once there was…Camelot.” And this, we gathered, inspired him to refer to UPSE as Camelot, waiting for its gallant alumni and friends to rescue it from the lack of resources available to sustain its vision of greatness.

The affair ended with everyone singing old favorites, accompanied on guitar by Jack, Manny and our National Scientist, Prof. Raul V. Fabella.
