SWEET CHARITY opened with much laughter, warmth and energy at the RCBC Theater. The UP School of Economics Alumni Association was all too proud and honored to have sponsored the Opening Night last August 5, 2011, for the benefit of the Association’s various projects. The fantastic song and dance numbers – Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, I’m the Bravest Individual – and the countless hilarious one liners were just too great and too much to miss!
SWEET CHARITY was conceived, choreographed, staged and directed by the multi-awarded and legendary Bob Fosse of Cabaret, All That Jazz, Pippin, Chicago fame and many more. Another Broadway icon, Neil Simon, wrote the rich, endearing and lively script of this musical play. Like his other masterpieces such as the Sunshine Boys, They’re Playing Our Song, and The Goodbye Girl, SWEET CHARITY has proven to be one of the most applauded, loved and awaited plays on Broadway and West End for many years. Stage Darlings and Hollywood Stars like Gwen Verdon, Juliet Prowse, Shirley McLaine, and most recently, Christina Applegate, are some of the actresses that played the lead role of Charity Hope Valentine – who seemed to be forever in search of true love.
This time, it’s the multi-talented Nikki Gil who essays the lead role on the Philippine Stage. All her co-stars – Kris Laurence, Ciara Sotto, Shiela Valderrama-Martinez, Sheree, OJ Mariano and Miguel Faustmann – are just amazing performers and splendid entertainers, thanks to the awesome ace Director Robbie Guevarra. Their performance during opening night was highly charged with animated energy, especially Nikki Gil’s wide-eyed and vivacious rendition of the title role.
So, to our schoolmates and friends, most especially those who had schedule conflicts and couldn’t come last Aug 5, check out this play that runs until August 27, 2011 at the RCBC Plaza. Highly recommended, indeed!
