SC invites 2 UP profs to Meralco power hike oral debates

The Supreme Court has invited two University of the Philippines professors during oral arguments on Meralco’s controversial P4.15 per kilowatt-hour power rate hike on Tuesday.

At a press briefing, SC Public Information Office chief and spokesman Theodore Te said invited by the SC as amici curiae or friends of the court were Rowaldo del Mundo, a professor at the UP National Engineering Center, and Maria Joy Abrenica from the UP School of Economics.

Faster expansion of health care coverage for informal sector needed

MANILA, Nov. 4 — Health care coverage for the informal sector is still slow according to a researcy of the UPecon Foundation – Health Equity and financial Protection in Asia Project (UPecon-HEFPA).

According to the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDs) under  the National Health Insurance Program, the formal sector is mandatorily enrolled in the social health insurance program, while those in the informal sector, mostly self-employed and the near poor, have to enroll voluntarily.

Professor Quimbo appointed to prestigious Dutch chair

The School’s Professor Stella Alabastro-Quimbo was recently appointed to the prestigious Prince Claus Chair in Development and Equity at the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam, with the rank of full professor.

Her appointment to the chair, named for Prince Claus of the Netherlands (1926-2003), follows upon an international search for candidates in Asia and the Pacific and an interview by a committee chaired by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands.
