Being the sole student formation within the University of the Philippines School of Economics carrying an academic-political orientation, the UP Economics Towards Consciousness
(UP ETC) has come to serve as an antecedent for active student
involvement on issues affecting the student body and the Filipino people at large. It has wielded economics as a tool for issue analysis, keeping a rational mindset rather than an impulsive and prejudiced one.
As it nears its 30th year, it shall continue to be firm in its commitment to advance active politicization, set on the high-principled goal of social change.

RECENT STANDS
Haze me not
We condemn the violence that has seized the life of UP student Cris Mendez and the lives of the long line of others before him. However, condemnation only takes us so far. Many a time has a man died undeservedly, and many a time have we condemned brutality. We air outrage when brotherhood kills, but let violence fester unnoticed when nobody dies.

The dormer is not a [Guinea] pig
The dormitory issue has affected real students, with very real lives and very real concerns. The UP dormer is not a subject for experimentation, and does not have to shoulder consequences of acts carried out with undue haste.

Gaya ng Isang Puno
Ang pag-iral ng mga bagay sa sangkalupaan ay hindi tiyak na magpakailanman, sapagkat tanging pagbabagong-anyo lamang ang lalagi’t sasabay sa pag-inog ng mundo.
Halos tatlong dekada na simula nang unang maipunla ang mga binhi ng kamalayan sa Iskul ng Ekonomiks. Dalawampu't walong taon na ang inangkin ng kasay-sayan. Subalit kahit napigtal man ang mga oras, nanatili pa rin ang pagsibol ng dati’y kampupot pang konsepto. Ngayon, ang UP ETC ay ganap na ngang maya-bong. Isang punong patuloy na nagsasanga at nag-uugat upang bigyang lilim ang mga diwang naghahanap ng lunan para sa kani-kanilang pagkalinang at bigyang tahanan ang mga pusong naghahanap ng pook na magkakanlong sa damdaming tangan.
Ang pagtubo niyong puno ay hindi naging madali. Ang ETC ay may mga sinagupa na mga paghamon. Matatandaan nga na ang binhi ay itinanim bilang sagot sa hamon at ito’y dinilig ng pagnanais na lunasan ang kawalang kamalayan sa noon ay madilim na lipunan. Ang pag-arok sa kamalayan ang naging tagapagtaguyod ng pagsibol ng puno.
